Things to Do in Red Wing, Minnesota in the Fall

Things to Do in Red Wing, Minnesota
Red Wing, Minnesota is about one hour Southeast from downtown Minneapolis. Known for it’s beautiful bluffs, historic sites and world famous boots, it’s a great spot for a day trip. It’s a super charming riverfront town and I’ve now been lucky enough to visit twice. Keeping reading for ideas on how to plan your fall visit!

Hike the Barn Bluff Trail
The Barn Bluff hike is an absolute must-see. The bluff overlooks the Mississippi River and is considered sacred by the Dakota people.
There’s free parking along the street and it was easy to find a spot. The hike itself took us just over an hour. We saw both lookout points and took a longer path back because it was so pretty. The most direct route would likely take 30-45 minutes.
It’s very steep and it was a workout to get to the top. But once you’re there, it is well worth it! About 25-35% of the trees had changed colors, so the red and yellow trees looked incredible!

Shop on Main Street Shopping or Visit a Bakery
After our hike we went into town. One thing to note is that a ton of places are either closed or don’t open until noon on Sunday. We finished our hike around 11:30am so luckily we didn’t have too much time to kill before everything opened up.
You’ll definitely want to visit the Hanisch Bakery for incredible baked goods. Sadly they were closed when we visited on a Sunday, but they’re known for donuts, cookies and coffee! Stop by the St. James Hotel to see a gorgeous building with cute shops inside. There’s a spot on the 5th floor called Jimmy’s Pub. It has a cool, laid back vibe and you don’t have to be a hotel guest to stop in.
The Duluth Trading Co. is also downtown and I love everything there! And you’ll definitely want to visit the Uffda Shop for authentic Scandanavian products and gifts.

Walk Around the Riverfront Park
Walk around Levee Park, which runs adjacent to the Mississippi River. Grab coffee or take out and have a picnic. There is a large grassy area and park benches. It’s a small park so if you just want to walk through the park, it will probably take you about five minutes.

Grab a Beer at the Brewery
To finish off the day, we stopped by the Red Wing Brewery! It’s a great little spot off the beaten path. The beer selection was varied and delicious! We didn’t get any food, but I hear the pizza is excellent.
That’s a wrap for some of the best things to do in Red Wing, Minnesota for a fall day trip! There are so many restaurants and shops we didn’t have time to check out, so I’ll definitely be back for more!
