Sidebar: New Restaurant in Northeast Minneapolis

Surdyk’s first opened in 1934 shortly after prohibition ended as a place to buy wine and snacks. Overtime, this little gem has evolved in to a special food market with high quality imported cheese, meat, pasta, baked goods and more. During the past few months, they closed down for a major renovation. They also added a new restaurant in their Northeast Minneapolis location. After patiently waiting for months, they reopened and I went to check it out!

Grab Something to Go, or Stay and Relax

The cheese shop went through a major overhaul over the summer. It used to have tall shelves and it was very closed off. They’ve completely transformed the space and opened up everything. When you walk in, the incredible cheese counter is still the focus point, but there’s so much more than just that! Surdyk’s offers great sandwiches, gourmet chocolates, and ready to go snacks and side dishes. And now, they also have new lighting, a modern and clean design, and they’ve added a coffee shop with a window facing the parking lot, so you can grab your coffee without ever entering the store.

They’ve also added an entirely new restaurant space called Sidebar. It has a beautiful modern copper bar with high ceilings, and a lot of glass and windows. They offer a full menu with burgers, salads, pork, cheese curds, soup and of course a cheese board.

Pro tip: Go to the cheese shop in the morning to get fresh bread and baguettes. If you go too late in the day, it may be all gone. We learned that the hard way!

Wine, Liquor and Beer

The largest part of the store is made up of the wine, liquor and beer selection. Before COVID, they often held free tastings, which were always fun. There are tons of options and I’m certain everyone can find something they like here.

Surdyk’s is located at 303 E. Hennepin Ave., in Minneapolis and its hours are Monday through Saturday 9:00 a.m. – 9:00 p.m. and Sunday 11:00a.m. – 6:00 p.m. Note: the cheese shop walk-up window opens at 7:00 a.m. Sidebar has a totally separate schedule. They’re open Monday through Thursday 4:00 p.m. until late and Friday through Sunday 11:00 a.m. – late.
