An Eco-Friendly Airbnb with Lake Superior Views

I knew I would enjoy my stay at the Live Klarhet domes along Minnesota’s North Shore, but I underestimated just how much I would enjoy it. Nestled in the woods up on a hill in Lutsen, Minnesota, these four domes are located in the heart of the best State Parks, restaurants, beaches, ski hills, and shops along Lake Superior’s North Shore. However, when you arrive at the property you will quickly forget about the bustle going on around the North Shore and find yourself feeling more grounded and connected to nature than imagined. Here are ten reasons why you should book your stay at the Live Klarhet domes right now.

1. A Sustainable, Eco-Friendly Dome

It’s easy to see all the eco-conscious details founders Nicole and Kirk thought about when building these domes. You’re asked to minimize water usage during showers and to turn off the wood pellet heater when you’re not in your room. There is no WiFi on the property, which means you’ll find yourself more focused on the trees and stars you see, and the birds you hear. There are snowshoes to use so you can explore the property, a nightly communal bonfire, and board games you can find in the activity shed. Be sure to bring a good book or magazine and leave the laptop at home.

2. A Cozy Glamping Experience

It’s important to remember the Live Klarhet domes are considered a glamping experience. So while you need to store food safely as to not attract bears and you are encouraged to take quick showers to minimize water usage, it is a far more comfortable experience than camping. There is a full bathroom in each dome with a toilet, large shower, and sink with running water. There is also a tiny kitchen with a small stove, mini-fridge, and sink. And the domes are stocked with the essentials, like salt and pepper, plates, knives, wine glasses, and even slippers and robes.

3. Sleep Under the Stars

One of my favorite things about these domes was how close to nature I felt without the discomfort or vulnerable feeling that can come with a tent. Each dome is strategically placed so that you cannot see into the other domes while inside your dome. Because of this, you can really feel alone and have a fully private experience. I suggest leaving the curtains open at night so you can fall asleep looking at the night sky and the millions of stars that shine bright in this remote area.

4. Wake Up to a Lake Superior Sunrise

I can’t think of many better ways to be woken up than by a vibrant pink and orange sunrise over Lake Superior. As I blinked my eyes open, the morning sky appeared to be on fire in the most incredible way. You can enjoy the colorful display from bed, or make a cup of coffee and sit by the heater as you get ready to start your day.

5. The 25 Acre Organic Food Forest

As Live Klarhet’s website says, “A food forest is a diverse planting of edible plants and integration of animals that attempts to mimic the ecosystems and patterns found in the natural world. Our food forest consists of an ever-evolving smörgÃ¥sbord of edible perennial fruit trees, shrubs, vegetables, herbs, and animals consciously intertwined in a way that optimizes the environment for each individual component to support and grow the whole.” Be sure to walk around the property and say hello to the friendly goats and chickens!

6. Across the Street from North Shore Winery

North Shore Winery is located at the base of Lutsen Mountains and across the street from Live Klarhet. This newer winery has only been around since 2016, and they offer wines with locally inspired names like Superior Agate Red, Boundary Waters Rose, and Caribou Sparkling. They often have special events going on with live music and markets with art and gifts for sale. They offer a variety of wines produced from local Minnesota grapes, as well as California grapes imported from the Lodi region. It’s a really special experience to sip quality wine made with California grapes while looking at Lake Superior in the distance.

7. Down the Road from Lutsen Mountains

Live Klarhet is on Ski Hill Road, and Lutsen Mountains is less than a mile up that road. Lutsen Mountains is definitely the best downhill skiing mountain in Minnesota, and of the best in the Midwest. With four mountains, 95 runs and an 820 foot vertical, Lutsen Mountains is great for beginners and experts. And what makes this mountain so unique are the incredible views you get of Lake Superior from the slopes!

8. Near Lakefront Luxury Dining Experiences

The Strand is an upscale restaurant located inside the Lutsen Resort, which is around the corner from Live Klarhet. This gorgeous resort offers stunning views of Lake Superior, and you don’t need to stay at the resort to enjoy the restaurant. You will want to make a reservation ahead of time though, as it’s one of the only upscale restaurants in this part of the North Shore. The Strand also has a massive wine cellar with hundreds of wines from all over the world. For food, you’ll find something for everyone with offerings such as Swedish meatballs, charcuterie boards, beef wellington, oysters Rockefeller, burgers, and fried chicken with waffles.

things to do in grand marais

10. A Short Drive to Grand Marais

Grand Marais is an adorable harbor town with a plethora of options for outdoor adventurers and nature lovers, and it’s about 20 minutes from the domes. Grand Marais itself offers stunning views of Lake Superior and has many hikes to choose from. You’ll also find cute shops, great restaurants, and the very popular Java Moose Coffee and Voyageur Brewery, both very much worth checking out. Visit my detailed blog post on the best things to do in Grand Marais for more inspiration.

Live Klarhet’s Big Plans for the Future

The future is bright for the young power couple behind Live Klarhet. Nicole and Kirk have some exciting projects in the works including classes on regenerative and biodynamic farming and gardening practices, cooking classes with whole food ingredients in a state-of-the-art teaching kitchen, 5-star culinary tasting experiences, and a sauna! I absolutely cannot wait to see what they come up with! Book your stay at Live Klarhet here.

Squeeee this looks amaaaazing! I like the idea of camping in the snow, but we don’t have the right gear, so I never quite get around to it. Glamping in such a gorgeous location sounds like a waaaaay better idea. I love that you can see the stars while you are snuggled up nice and warm!

Plus those goats are soooo flipping cute!

This is so cool! I love the eco-friendly dome — I doubt my bf would be down for it but it’s definitely up my alley. 😀 I love being able to see a bunch of stars in the sky!
