5 Reasons to Visit Big Rock Creek

Did you know that nestled just a few miles north of Taylors Falls is one of the most historic pieces of property in Wisconsin? Big Rock Creek has nearly 1,000 acres of beautiful fields, hiking trails, trout ponds, a lake, and a creek that was once a frequent vacation spot for railroad tycoons such as James J. Hill. Eventually, this land turned into a cattle farm, and in 2018 it became a place for weddings, corporate events, and family vacations.
As you walk around the property you’re likely to encounter deer, swans, cranes, mallards, and maybe even a black bear. It’s a beautiful and peaceful place to spend a weekend, and it’s very close to some of the most popular attractions along the St. Croix River including Interstate State Park, wineries, and golf courses.

1. Great Lodging Options
Big Rock Creek has a number of unique and beautiful lodging options. During my visit, I stayed in a geodome, which includes a beautiful view of the lake, a grill, patio, fire pit, cooler, AC unit (or heater), coffee maker, and a comfortable Queen-sized bed. There are also three cabins scattered around the property that sleep between three and ten people, as well as beautiful yurts for a fun glamping experience.

2. Lots of Activities
Enjoy various activities including paddle boarding, kayaking, morning walks through the woods, trout fishing, electric rangers, and swimming. Kayak and stand-up paddleboards are included in your stay, and for an additional fee, you can rent a pontoon, and fishing rods! Click here for a complete list of rental options.

3. Great Features and Amenities
The main attraction on the Big Rock Creek property is The Barn, one of the largest barns in Wisconsin. It was originally a bridge in Boston built over 200 years ago. It was shipped across the country and turned into a cow barn. Today this beautiful and historic bridge structure is lined with chandeliers hanging from the rafters making it a stunning location for weddings, family gatherings, and corporate events. Other amenities provided by Big Rock Creek include a full-service bar, fire-pits, hayrides, grills, and estate tours.

4. Close to Interstate State Park
Big Rock Creek is just five minutes from one of Minnesota’s most popular state parks. Interstate State Park is best known for its glacial potholes, which were formed 10,000 years ago. They were created by melting glaciers and are conveniently located at the park entrance. Continue hiking through the park for beautiful sandstone cliffs, awesome views of the St. Croix River, and epic bursts of color in the fall.

5. Close to Restaurants and Wineries
Big Rock Creek is located just down the road from St. Croix Falls and Taylors Falls. Both towns have a great variety of coffee shops, wineries, and spots for burgers and sandwiches. Some great spots in St. Croix Falls include Dalles House for burgers and sandwiches and Valley Sweets for candy and ice cream. The Chateau St. Croix Winery is four minutes north of Big Rock Creek and is another great place to check out! In Taylors Falls, you’ll want to check out Coffee Talk, Juneberry Cafe and Schoony’s Malt Shop.
